Sarah McLachlan
Foundation Background

The Sarah McLachlan Foundation was founded in 1999, inspired by the vision of founding partner, international singer and songwriter, Sarah McLachlan. The Foundation’s mandate is simple: to bring music into the lives of young Canadians, through providing free music programs to youth in under-served communities. The impact of participation is profound; building self-esteem, and fostering creativity in young people through the power of music.

In 2002, The Foundation launched its first school, Sarah McLachlan Music Outreach – An Arts Umbrella Project, in Vancouver’s inner city, offering students free music instruction in guitar, piano, percussion and choir. This innovative program reaches over 200 students, grades four through 12, offering instructional classes, practice rooms, and a media lab for them to creatively express themselves.

The school provides an inspiring, secure place where students go to learn, practice, and connect with friends. Students acquire a life-long appreciation of music, and enthusiasm for learning, but most importantly, Sarah McLachlan Music Outreach offers a nurturing environment where young people learn important life skills, are free to explore their creative potential and develop peer connections that will last a lifetime.

All funds raised at Barefoot in the Backyard will go to support the Sarah McLachlan Foundation.
